Competition or Community

In my discussions with yoga teachers and studio owners, I find that many are not approaching other teachers or studios in their area. They are concerned about discussing business with the “competition”. They might try to steal your students! Or take your marketing ideas!

Viewing other teachers and studios as competition automatically limits how successful your business will become. Just as yoga is not meant to be competitive on the mat, it is not meant to be competitive in the business world! Competition implies that there is a limit to your success – that a fixed number of students exist for all teachers and studios.

This simply is not true. Sure, there may at this one moment in time be X number of students who practice yoga. But there are also X number of people who want to learn yoga. And X number of people who don’t know where to go for yoga. There is abundance in this business!

Start looking to your peers as your business community. Find out about their business. How? Ask them! Take a class! They are probably attracting a completely different type of student. Help by directing those students to them – they will start directing students to you as well. Yoga is a personal experience – if one teacher doesn’t inspire a particular student, lead them towards the teacher who will. The creation of a yoga business community opens you to a new energy of abundance.
